Introduction:
The 3G has commenced operations. Zonal offices are being setup. Some zones have 3G coordinators while all the zones have Secretaries. Five zonal offices have been acquired. The sixth will be acquired within the next days. Plans are in advanced stages for state Offices. It is envisaged that by January 30, 2010, 3G offices will be functional in all the states.”

What Lies Ahead:
For the last two to three months we have recorded success in establishing basic structures and communicating the importance and urgency of the 3G platform for the resolution of Nigeria’s crisis. There is a sense of expectation as more Nigerians look towards the full emergence of 3G as a mass based political party. So, the question is what lies ahead of the group in terms of strategy and organization?
What is our Niche?
Our selling point is our niche. We hit the political stage as a new movement and immediately secured the attention of those who matter in terms of public opinion. The initial response from Nigerians of all walks of life, especially professionals indicate that they accord recognition to the 3G platform because of its symbolism of hope and transformation. So, what is our niche?
People Oriented: first, we are perceived as a people-oriented political movement. Although we are yet to launch broad campaign, our limited outings in terms of the advertorials we placed in few national newspapers have attracted positive response from the people because of the perceptions that we are focusing on the people. This focus is evident in the tone and substance of the mobilization message signed by the Chairman of the Steering Committee.
Change focused: 3G is also identified as change-focused. Our policy platforms articulate the need for radical change of Nigerian politics starting with an emphasis on the establishment of real democratic structures and culture within the party. This focus has endeared us to some of the civil society leaders and politicians who have come across 3G as members or associates.
Mass-Oriented: if anything, the fact that 3G is the first political movement in this dispensation to present itself to the people to join testify to our uniqueness as a political group that believe that its primary responsibility is to appeal to the generality of Nigerian people and to mobilize them to embrace the platform as a vehicle for change.
Liberal democratic: 3G is evidently liberal democratic in the best traditions of liberal democratic political parties in the west. Many Nigerian politicians do not pay attention to the fact that Nigerian elites are becoming increasingly politically liberal. This means that they attribute legitimacy to only those institutions and processes that are inherently democratic and enhance freedom and liberty of the people. 3G has continued to be attractive to Nigerians who come across its platforms. The democratic character of steering committee meetings has enhanced this liberal democratic character. The secretariat has also advanced this character in its relationships with other stakeholders.

Reinforcing Our Niche:
One negative characteristic of the Nigerian political parties is the abject lack of concern for the economic and social wellbeing of the Nigerian people. This is notable as we argue in the policy brief on deregulation in the fact that neither the PDP nor any of the opposition parties or political movements issued a strategic policy response to the deregulation issue.
We are a different platform and to maintain this difference we should establish a framework for quick and strategic response to policy issues that concern the economic and social welfare of Nigerian people. There is a vacuum in policy leadership in Nigeria today. If 3G fills this vacuum then it becomes the party or movement of choice for the Nigerian professional class and elites.
It is also important to reinforce the process of internal democracy and liberalism in the group. It is necessary to ensure real democracy in the development of policy platforms and processes. The contradiction of Nigerian political process where an undemocratic device is being used to arrive at democracy should not be associated with 3G. We will also maintain our niche by avoiding elitism and engaging the people directly as much as possible. |
